Hepzyme Treatment
Hepzyme is a commercially available enzyme that is used to neutralize heparin in plasma samples submitted for clotting tests. Plasma is added to the vial of Hepzyme and allowed to stand for 15 minutes. This neutralizes up to 1.0 unit/ml of heparin.
Our staff tests for adequacy of heparin removal by performing a thrombin clot time on the treated plasma sample. There is no additional charge for this test.
If Hepzyme appears on a report from the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Laboratory, then all results of clot-based tests will have been derived from the post-Hepzyme sample.
Please note that Hepzyme cannot remove anticoagulants other than heparin (e.g. lepirudin, argatroban, bivalirudin or fondaparinux).
