FHCTR scientists to present research results in Kytoto, Japan

Center for Thrombosis Research scientists will be presenting the results of three of their research projects at the upcoming (July) International Society for Thrombosis and Hemostasis meetings in Kyto, Japan. The frist of these studies reports on microparticle-associated Tissue Factor in an animal model of pancreatic cancer as a cause of systemic hypercoagulability. The second study suggests that patients receiving heparin flushes during chemotherapy may have sufficient circulating heparin to support platelet activation by bevicizumab.

FDA approves dabigatran for stroke prevention, embolism, in AF patients

The US FDA has approved dabigatran (Pradaxa) for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation. The drug will be available in two doses: 150 mg twice daily and, for a small subset with severe renal impairment, 75 mg twice daily. At last there is an oral anticoagulant that is at least as safe and effective as warfarin but is more consistent in its effects and does not require cumbersome anticoagulation monitoring or careful attention to diet.

Abstracts accepted for 2010 ASH Meeting

Researchers at the Florida Hospital Center for Thrombosis Research have had two abstracts accepted for presentation at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology. The meeting will be held in Orlando on December 4-7, 2010. The authors and titles of these abstracts are:

Meyer T, Robles-Carrillo L, Desai H, Hatfield M, Amaya M, Francis JL, and Amirkhosravi A. Comparison of Platelet-Activating Potential of Bevacizumab+VEGF and Aflibercept+VEGF Complexes.

Spath B, Amirkhosravi A, Davila M, Francis JL, Eifrig B, Bokemeyer C and Langer F.

Grant from American Heart Association

Dr. Ali Amirkhosravi, Principal Scientist at the Florida Center for Thrombosis Research has been awarded a 2-year Grant-in-Aid by the American Heart Association. Dr. Amirkhosravi will study the mechanisms of coagulation activation and thrombosis induced by immune complexes.

Research to be published in The Journal of Immunology

A paper written by scientists at the Florida Hospital Center for Thrombosis Research titled "Anti-CD40L immune complexes potently activate platelets in vitro and cause thrombosis in FCGR2A transgenic mice" has been accepted for publication in The Journal of Immunology.
